Jazzfest 2005 Jazz,
Blues & Beyond
Dalhousie Institute
20-23 January 2005
The events stands cancelled
due to the Tsunami Disaster
While gearing up for
Jazzfest 2005 next January, the accent will be on the
quality of the cross-cultural exchange - with concerts, workshops and lecture demonstrations: the promise of a
great time for the avowedly music-loving people of Kolkata, the east and north-east of the subcontinent, and abundant
goodwill for sponsors and advertisers.
Groups expected for
Jazzfest 2005
Hellborg/Husband/Topping
After Allan Holdsworth
had to back out of the Indian tour, Gary Husband and Jonas Hellborg facing this dilemma see Steve Topping as the
only solution. Pairing up one of the strongest rhythm sections imaginable with the greatest "under the radar"
guitar player. These guys will be taking bold steps into the new musical universe.
Multi-instrumentalist Gary
Husband has performed
with artists as varied as Jack Bruce, Billy Cobham, Allan Holdsworth, Level 42, Gary Moore, Jimmy Nail, and Andy
Summers. Though known throughout the world as a first-rate drummer, his solo recordings reveal him to be a pianist,
composer and bandleader of exceptional merit.
Jonas Hellborg has collaborated with some of the most powerful
and original guitarist and drummers of rock and jazz such as John Mc Laughlin, Shawn Lane, Joe Satriani, Buckethead,
Tony Williams, Anders Johansson, Billy Cobham, Trilok Gurtu, Selvaganesh, Michael Shrieve.
Steve Topping has not been over exposed by anybody's standard.
He does fit the bill that way. Spending the last 25 years developing into one of the real masters of modern guitar
makes him fit the other criteria as well. And.. he just happens to be one of Allan Holdsworth’s favorite guitar
players.
Sunny Jain Collective,
USA
with Sunny Jain (drums), Rez Abbasi (guitar / sitar guitar), Gary Wang (acoustic bass) & Steve Welsh
(tenor saxophone / effects). The leader-drummer's proficiency at implying his lines makes the music that much more
beguiling, and Rez Abbasi's delicate guitar bumps up its ECM quotient.
Mandu Sarara, Brasil
The quintet consists of Beto Spordeler (soprano, tenor & baritone saxophone, flute), Lucas Vargas (piano, rhodes
accordian & melodeon), Marcio Arantes (acoustic & electric bass), Mario Giaotto (drums and percussion)
and Rodrigo Braganca (acoustic & electric guitar). Mandu Sarara presents a unique style based on rhythms ranging
from frevo, baiao and maracatu, as well as choro, samba and bossanova - with interesting improvisations and more
elaborate harmony to create a new urban style.
Der Rote Bereich, Germany
(sponsored by Max Mueller Bhavan)
The most important representative of German avante garde Jazz - the band members include Frank
Möebus (e-guitar) along with
Rudi Mahall (bass clarinet), Marty Cook (trombone), Henning Sieverts (bass) and Jim Black (drums). Der Rote Bereich's
energetic music and original sound is inspired by pop and rock music as well as jazz and twelve-tone music.
HFT
Great Society Guitarist
Arjun Sen, local legendary bassist Lew Hilt & drummer Bhuvan Sachdeva play simple melodic motifs leading to
improvisations that can switch forms and styles depending on the day.Drawing from Jazz, Rock, Folk, Indian Classical,
Blues and various other genres of music, the band tries to create an easy conversation among the three instruments
that ranges from the lyrical to the chaotic taking you through a pretty wide range of dynamics.
Mito, India, Germany
Featuring Dipak Sarma (bansuri), Torge Niemann (guitar), Subroto Manna (tabla) and Ralph Kamphuis (vibraphone).
Mito's music is universal - it includes jazz, folk, western & Indian classical music. The Rhythms are delicate
and complex with breathtakingly fast melodic movements. see
